In der vorliegenden Publikation kommen österreichische Lehmbauerinnen und Lehmbauer zu Wort, deren Herangehensweise so vielfältig ist, wie die Zusammensetzung des Materials Lehm selbst. Während die einen über ihre praktischen Erfahrungen im Umgang mit dem Material Lehm plaudern, verfolgen andere einen wissenschaftlichen Zugang, engagieren sich in der Lehre, berichten über den Einsatz von Lehm in Entwicklungsprojekten, über die Entwicklung neuer Systembaustoffe oder über ihre Erfahrungen bei der Erhaltung und Sanierung von Lehmgebäuden. Ideen, Wünsche und Erwartungen in Bezug auf die zukünftige Richtung des österreichischen Lehmbaus werden ebenso zum Thema gemacht wie die Einbettung lokaler Aktivitäten in einen internationalen Kontext.

Seit mittlerweile 12 Jahren gibt es die Vortragsreihe `Architektur transdisziplinär´ an der Architekturfakultät der Technischen Universität Wien. In einem zweiten Band werden nun weitere Vorträge daraus veröffentlicht, welche die Forderung nach mehr Transdisziplinarität an den Hochschulen unterstreichen sollen.
Ziel der Vortragsreihe und der zugehörigen Publikation ist es, den Weitblick und das Selbstverständnis der Studierenden zu fördern, um eingefahrene Muster innerhalb der eigenen Disziplin zu hinterfragen und sich über die vermeintlich sicheren Grenzen eines klar definierten wissenschaftlichen Bereiches hinauszuwagen.
So wie ein Orchester aus vielen Instrumenten besteht, die alle ihren eigenen, individuellen Teil der Partitur übernehmen, ist es das harmonische Zusammenspiel und das `Aufeinander-Hören´, das ein Werk erst in seiner vollen Kraft zur Geltung bringt. Das `Sich-Zusammenspielen´ als Prozess ist Teil des Erfolgs. Wer die Grenzen seiner Disziplin hinter sich lässt, begibt sich auf unsicheres Terrain. Das erfordert Mut zur Improvisation, ist aber gleichzeitig ein essenzieller Schritt in Richtung Innovation.
Village Architecture on Sumatra – A comparative study: Toba Batak, Karo Batak, Minangkabau

The village architecture of Sumatra offers some of the most unique examples of built heritage in Indonesia. The distinctive roof structures with their various gables and upward-rising spires have become a symbol of the richness of Indonesian cultural heritage and the important role architecture has played in processes of identity formation throughout Indonesian history. In this volume based on comparative research of the village architecture of the Karo Batak, the Toba Batak and the Minangkabau, the distinctive characteristics of regional architectural features are examined with a view to obtain a cognitive comprehension of architectural principles. Moreover, the architecture of Sumatra is seen as a physical expression of mythological stories. An ongoing documentation and
interpretation of the regional architecture can contribute to the preservation of the built heritage of Sumatra, in order to foster a sense of belonging and regional identity also for future generations.
Traditional Architecture on Qeshm Island / Persian Gulf, Iran

The architectural heritage of Qeshm island, with its wind catchers, courtyard houses and refined structures for channelling and storing water, is a real treasure. Over the centuries the inhabitants of Qeshm have developed distinguished architectural solutions to meet the harsh climatic conditions on the island. Due to globalizing impacts and a changing lifestyle the knowledge regarding traditional construction methods and materials is on the decline. The research work conducted by an international team of professionals and students from Austria and Iran presented in this volume should raise awareness for the necessity of preserving the great architectural heritage of the island and underline its potential for providing a sustainable living environment for future generations.
Tradition in Transition. Reflections on the Architecture of Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a country with a unique architectural heritage. Due to globalizing impacts and cultural changes, Ethiopia´s architecture is in a process of transition. This causes tensions between the traditional built environment and non-reflected imports, but it also opens up new potentials for creative transformation and innovation. This book represents an interdisciplinary approach to analyzing the strong collective creativity that characterizes Ethiopian architecture, its meaning, and its impact on identity formation processes. Contributions deal with a variety of topics: Reflections on rapid urbanization processes concentrate on current destructive elements in town planning and offer suggestions for a more sustainable development. Further topics range from the monumental architectural treasures of the highlands to the simplest shelter of the desert nomads who struggle to use every resource available for building a home.

Architektur und Identität – Die neue Suche nach dem Eigenen

Architektur ist ein Bedeutungsträger, der in den jeweiligen Kulturen unterschiedlich behandelt, konstruiert und interpretiert wird. Die Autorin geht davon aus, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen der gebauten Form (Architektur) und der menschlichen Selbstwahrnehmung (Identität) gibt. Der Identitätsbegriff kreist um die Fragestellung, wie sich komplexe soziale Gefüge und Gruppen selbst wahrnehmen und definieren bzw. wie diese Selbstbilder in gebaute Form übertragen werden.
Die „neue Suche“ nach dem Eigenen bezieht sich auf rezente Entwicklungstendenzen, in denen massive überlokale Kräfte mit lokalen Identitäten interagieren. Durch überlokale Einflüsse entstehen Identitätskonflikte, die sich unter der Oberfläche ausbreiten und nur schwer fassbar sind. Die gebaute Umwelt stellt ein Medium dar, solche Entwicklungen in Form von „Images“ sichtbar zu machen. In den Feldstudien Samoa, Ladakh und Bali werden aktuelle Identitätsfindungsprozesse anhand baulicher Beispiele vergleichend analysiert und in einen universellen Zusammenhang gestellt, wobei die Problematik und das zukünftige Potential dieser Tendenzen abgewogen bzw. antizipiert wird.

Die im vorliegenden Band gesammelten Beiträgen zur Vortragsreihe „Architektur transdisziplinär“ am Institut für Architektur- und Kunstgeschichte, Bauforschung und Denkmalpflege an der Technischen Universität Wien zeigen disziplinen-übergreifende Perspektiven auf, die dem geänderten Berufsbild des Architekten/der Architektin gerecht werden. Es kommen ProfessionistInnen zu Wort, die transdisziplinär arbeiten und denen es gelungen ist, ihre persönlichen Neigungen mit ihrer Leidenschaft für Architektur verbinden zu können. Während die einen aus der Praxis plaudern und ihren Werdegang und Berufsalltag schildern, befassen sich andere auf wissenschaftlicher oder künstlerischer Ebene mit den diversen Berührungspunkten von Architektur und Tanz, Medizin, neuen Medien, Klang, Bühnenbild, Gender, Soziologie, Ethnologie und Malerei.
So wird nicht nur ein realistisches, praxisbezogenes Bild des ArchitektInnenalltags aufgezeigt, sondern es werden Alternativen und Lösungen vermittelt, die Mut machen, die eigenen Horizonte in diverse Richtungen zu erweitern. Am Anfang eines jeden kreativen Aktes steht die Idee. Ziel des vorliegenden Buches ist es, solchen Ideen auf die Sprünge zu helfen – zündenden Ideen, kreativen Ideen, Geschäftsideen, Produktideen, Entwurfsideen… Ideen, die das Potential sind für Innovation, für geistige Purzelbäume, für die Freiheit, sich über disziplinäre Grenzen hinweg zu setzen und unbekanntes Terrain zu beschreiten.
Architecture and Culture – Building in the Tension of Increasing Global Interaction

In a world of rapid cultural transformation there is a growing need to introduce the theme of “culture” in architecture. This book presents an interdisciplinary approach towards the role of culture in the built environment from the perspective of social sciences and cultural studies. The meanings of such topics as globalization, identity, tradition or homogenization are examined in relation to architectural issues using a cross-cultural approach.
Contemporary architects have to face a world without certainties. They are requested to design for a broad variety of cultural environments necessitating a number of new considerations for meeting cultural challenges. New approaches and guidelines are called for that cannot be found in the discipline of architecture alone.
Reflecting cultural changes and globalization processes from various viewpoints will provide us with an almost unlimited potential for creative transformations. By making the “cultural issue” a topic – also and especially in the field of architecture – such creative transformations can give rise to a wide range of new architectural forms and features that will be unique in their expressions and far away from the much discussed “homogeneous global pulp”.
Living Culture in the Himalayas. Anthropological Guidelines for Building in Developing Countries

In a world of rapid cultural transformation this book takes a new look at architecture from an anthropological perspective. From the 1990s on there has been an increasing call for the integration of culture into development work and into planning and construction processes in developing countries. However, the mere declaration that it is absolutely necessary today to include the subject of culture in planning processes is rarely followed up by theoretical precision or methodological considerations. It is therefore the main goal of my work to develop a methodological toolkit for the integration of culture into planning.
To this end, an exemplary field study was carried out in Ladakh, in the Indian Himalaya. The housing problems in Ladakh are representative for many regions in the Himalayas and similar problems can be found in many less developed regions worldwide. A methodological approach for a so-called “anthropological pre-design study” (APD-Study) has been developed and introduced prior to a major building project (Solar Town) in Ladakh. A lot of useful information could be gathered in a relatively short amount of time and the results of the study are now with the planners helping them in their own decision making process in a number of ways. Drawing from this experience, general guidelines were elaborated – and are presented to the readers in a readily accessible form – in order to promote the introduction of similar studies in other world regions with comparable problems.
